History of the Château des Barrenques

Domaine des Barrenques 1324-1962
1324-1962

A visionary Marquis imagined and laid the foundations for harmonious, logical agricultural development in harmony with the natural environment of the banks of the Rhône. 15 successive generations, developed a real economy, structured the territory and created a social link with its inhabitants.

Portrait of Domaine des Barrenques
1962-1992

A farmer repatriated from Algeria, where he had lost his land, will take over the last farms and cultivate the last lands of the Château des Barrenques. The castle will no longer be a lever for the development of the territory and agricultural activity will stop and the land will be scattered when he dies.

History of the Château des Barrenques
1992-2002

An Irishman bought the castle and used it as it was, in a personal move that continued to isolate the castle from the surrounding area.

Inauguration of the Château des Barrenques
2002-2022

A lawyer with a passion for heritage will realize his life's project and commit his money to saving the castle, the mill, the chapel and the silkworm nursery, but he will neglect the park. He opposed the mayor of Lamotte and the state (prefecture of Vaucluse) head-on, then, in contradiction with town-planning regulations, using his own funds, he saved the buildings and obtained 5 ISMAH classifications.

Inauguration of the Domaine des Barrenques
2022—23

Taken over by the Domaines & Events group, the founder Nicolas Tommasini, with a wealth of successful experience in real estate and hotel development, imagined with his partners a simple economic model to bring the place back to life.

To go further

The Château des Barrenques, located in Provence, has a rich history that dates back over 700 years.
In 1300, the city of Pont-Saint-Esprit, an economic crossroads between Lyon and Camargue, became a nerve center with the construction of the oldest bridge over the Rhône. The Saint Roch family, a visionary, was at the origin of the creation of the Castle in 1324 on the left bank of the Rhône.
This estate extends over 300 hectares, with the construction of 22 farms around the castle, creating a thriving agricultural economy. The Castle and its outbuildings, including a 35-meter-long silkworm farm, were designed to withstand the Mistral and be integrated into a vast 6-hectare park. River water was diverted to feed a mill and an aqueduct, essential for the production of silk, a key activity in the domain. The 4000 mulberry trees on the estate supplied silk to the weavers of Lyon, making the Château des Barrenques the largest silkworm factory in France at the time.

Over the centuries, this agricultural and family structure has passed through the ages, evolving while remaining in the same noble line. In the 20th century, during the Second World War, the estate still ensured the livelihood of local families.

From 1962 to 1992, a farmer repatriated from Algeria took over the last farms and cultivated the last land on the estate. This man, having lost his land in Algeria, maintained the agricultural activities of the Castle for 30 years.

Between 1992 and 2002, an Irish man bought the Castle, but with no real intention of revitalizing the place. He takes a personal approach that further isolates the castle from its territory. During this period of ten years, the field remained frozen in time.

From 2002 to 2022, a lawyer passionate about heritage took possession of the Castle and set out to save this historic jewel. He invested his own funds to restore the Castle, the mill, the chapel and the magnanerie. Despite tensions with the local authorities, in particular the Mayor of Lamotte and the prefecture of Vaucluse, he managed to obtain the classification of the estate in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments (ISMH) in 2021. However, the park was left abandoned during these 20 years.

Today, the Château des Barrenques, listed as a Historic Monument in 2021, was bought by the Domaines & Events group in 2022, and which is bringing this historic place back to life through ambitious event projects, by reinventing this Castle to host weddings, private events, seminars, and corporate events. This new orientation makes it possible to perpetuate the Château's heritage while integrating it into a modern and sustainable economic model.
